The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
