Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
